Shea Owens

"His vocal quality is stunning, with all the richness of a well-rounded baritone voice but with a striking brightness that thrills, particularly in his upper range."

L'incoronazione di Poppea

  • Theater St. Gallen 24 Museumstrasse St. Gallen, SG, 9000 Switzerland (map)

Love, power, morality, corruption… Monteverdi’s final masterpiece The Coronation of Poppea is often described as his greatest achievement, combining mythic and human themes and featuring some of his most glorious music. It premiered in the carnival season of 1642/1643. The story depicts the relationship between the love-drunk Emperor Nero and the cunning and ambitious Poppea, which becomes a game of love and power, life and death for all those involved. In his last opera, Monteverdi attractively combined musical-sensual nuances with a merciless struggle for power.

In 1935/1936 the baroque opera was edited by Ernst Krenek. He came from the environment of the famous Ferruccio Busoni and was inspired by composer Igor Stravinsky. He later became known for his jazz opera Jonny Plays On. His skillful instrumentation and restructuring of the plot revive Monteverdi's work in the spirit of the 1930s.
