Shea Owens

"His vocal quality is stunning, with all the richness of a well-rounded baritone voice but with a striking brightness that thrills, particularly in his upper range."

Kashchey the Immortal / The Nightingale

  • Theater St. Gallen (map)

After Igor Stravinsky had spent the summer of 1902 with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and his family, his decision was clear: he would give up his law studies and henceforth devoted only to the music. For three years, until his death, Rimsky-Korsakov gave Stravinsky composition lessons twice a week. With The Nightingale , Stravinsky continues the tradition of his teacher to process a fairytale material into an opera. Following the model by Hans Christian Andersen, Stravinsky tells of the Emperor of China, who is infatuated with the song of the nightingale. However, as an artificially constructed nightingale catches its attention, the real nightingale flies away. But only she can save the emperor from death.

Rimsky-Korsakov's rarely-performed opera The immortal Kaschtschei tells the Russian fairy tale of the villain Kaschtschei, who has spilled his soul into the tears of his daughter in order to avoid death.

Mr. Owens will perform as Prince Ivan and The Emperor's Chamberlain. For tickets and more info, click here.
