The Seasons (Die Jahreszeiten)

  • Theater St. Gallen (map)

In this secular oratorio, Joseph Haydn's music gives the year and times beyond a concrete action a variety of musical atmospheres, creating feelings and moods. The starting point of a dance journey through the year is a picture gallery. Diverse pictures from different epochs and styles are created by the

Music and the dance come to life. Spring is central to this: it marks the end of cold and frost, the return of light and heat, and at the same time the time of sowing, the fruits of which will be harvested in summer or fall. The summer with its heat represents a time of stagnation, the autumn impresses with incredible colors and effervescent storms, and winter fascinates by the contrast of coldness and ravishing beauty. The knowledge of the law of this eternal repetition and at the same time the unpredictability of nature is the fascination that Haydn captures with his composition. Beate Vollack will stage the seasons in colorful and emotional scenes.

Mr. Owens performs as the bass soloist on Sept. 30, Oct. 2, Oct. 28, Nov. 11, and Dec. 8. For tickets and more information, click here.
